For the most part, very little changes during the large cutscene following the defeat of the final boss. Most of the differences are at other plot points near the end of the game. The story wraps up pretty much the same way no matter what, so some people prefer to say the game has "multiple ending variations" instead of "multiple endings." But some people don't care about the difference, and some people don't want to put forth the extra typing energy, so most people just call them different endings. >_>; Perhaps future versions of this guide will have scripts of various scenes that change in different endings.... No promises! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Identifying Different Endings ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is a basic way to identify the different ending variations... The first name is eighth character in your party; second name is the character who the last part of the plot focuses on a lot. The endings aren't really numbered; I just numbered them to make the guide clearer. +--------------------+------------------+ | 8th chara in party | Plot focus chara | +-----------+--------------------+------------------+ | ENDING #1 | Kratos | Colette | +-----------+--------------------+------------------+ | ENDING #2 | Zelos | Colette | +-----------+--------------------+------------------+ | ENDING #3 | Zelos | Sheena | +-----------+--------------------+------------------+ | ENDING #4 | Zelos | Genis | +-----------+--------------------+------------------+ | ENDING #5 | Zelos | Raine | +-----------+--------------------+------------------+ | ENDING #6 | Zelos | Presea | +-----------+--------------------+------------------+ | ENDING #7 | Zelos | Regal | +-----------+--------------------+------------------+ | ENDING #8 | Zelos | Zelos | +-----------+--------------------+------------------+ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- How to Obtain Different Endings ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Throughout the game, various choices you've made have affected how much the other characters like Lloyd. This information isn't displayed in the menu anywhere, so you'll mostly have to keep track of it in your head. However, the fortune teller in Triet will give you some vague info on it, which may or may not be useful. After event #132 (the scene at Altessa's which has like two-and-half major plot twists), you are told to go to Flanoir to get a doctor. Some characters will stay behind, while some escort the doctor. The characters who stay behind will come into your inn room one at a time and ask you if you want to go outside and talk. (Kratos doesn't come into your room; he will call you outside with a creepy disembodied voice.) Refer to the chart in the section above. For ENDING #1, go outside with Kratos. For the others, talk to the second character listed. Because some characters are leaving with the doctor, you only get four options for characters in this scene. If you don't want the first character who comes in to ask if you want to go outside, just say "sorry" (or "I have a bad feeling about this") and the next will come in. I THINK Kratos will always be an option, and the others are the three non-Kratos characters who like you the most. If that's not the case, then it's the four characters who like Lloyd most (meaning Kratos has to be one of those four for him to be an option). Either way, if you want the Kratos ending, don't worry about how much Zelos likes Lloyd compared to Kratos; it makes no difference. You can say "sorry" to Zelos just like the others and wait until Kratos's creepy voice calls to you. To sum it up - that scene is pretty much the sole determining point for which ending you get. Really. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Differences Between Endings ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- IN ENDINGS 2~8 .... ...The person you go outside in Flanoir with.... -talks to Lloyd at night in Heimdall -backs Lloyd up before the fight with Kratos -is kidnapped by Mithos after Origin fight -is the only character besides Lloyd who doesn't have a some emotional issue with the illusions in Welgaia (Zelos faces Seles in spider scene) -is shown at the ending (when Noishe runs up to Lloyd and Dirk), because he/she is going on an exsphere-collecting mission with Lloyd ...Zelos betrays you at your next visit to the Tower of Salvation. He leaves with Pronyma and the two of them sic some random angel lackeys on you (including #246: Gatekeeper, which only appears at this point). But Zelos was just faking to get Aionis, and he saves everyone who had some cheesy death scene throughout that dungeon, and he saves Colette when Mithos is having a fit and throwing random magic around. Kratos pops in at the scene after you kill(?) Yggdrasil, tells you that you have to fight him. Later when you get the Material Blade, Kratos has to stay behind at Dirk's house because he's injured. During the ending, it shows Zelos talking to the king of Tethe'alla about sending Sheena to Iselia as an emissary of peace. ...During the scenes in Welgaia on ENDINGS 3~8, Colette will take the place of whoever you went outside with in the snow scene. It might seem strange for her to be in the scene with Alicia or the mirror, but they made it work somehow. In the spider scene, she's haunted by Remiel. ...During the scene in the Tower of Salvation while arrows are shooting at Lloyd, he will dodge the final arrow on ENDINGS 3~7. On ENDING #2, he is saved because the final arrow strikes the Snow Hare that Colette gave him. On ENDING #8, he is saved because the final arrow strikes Zelos's cruxis crystal. IN ENDINGS #1 .... ...If you go outside wth Kratos.... -no one talks to Lloyd at night in Heimdall -no one backs Lloyd up before the fight with Kratos -Colette is kidnapped by Mithos after Origin fight -Colette is the only character besides Lloyd who doesn't have a some emotional issue with the illusions in Welgaia (Kratos faces Lloyd in spider scene) -Colette is shown at the ending (when Noishe runs up to Lloyd and Dirk) ...Zelos betrays you at your next visit to the Tower of Salvation. Pronyma leaves him to take care of Lloyd and the others, so they have to kill him (monster #236). Kratos saves everyone from those cheesy death scenes throughout that dungeon, and he saves Colette when Mithos is having a fit and throwing random magic around. He tells you that you have to fight him and leaves. Later when you get the Material Blade, Kratos joins your party. You can see some little optional scenes in Luin (if you build it to max) and Triet near the end of the game. ...During the scene in the Tower of Salvation while arrows are shooting at Lloyd, he is saved because the final arrow strikes the locket that Noishe gave him. (Yes, this means you need to complete the game from start to finish at least twice to complete your Monster Book.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Items Only Received on Certain Endings ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -If you talk to Colette in the Flanoir scene, you get "Snow Hare" item (Accessory/Doll; gives various stat boosts). -If you talk to Kratos in the Flanoir scene, you get "Kratos' Locket" item (Valuable). -If you talk to Zelos in the Flanoir scene, you get "The Chosen's Orb" item (Valuable). -If you talk to anyone else, you don't get an item. (Yes, this means you need to complete the game from start to finish at least thrice to complete your Collector's Book.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subevents/Sidequests only avaiable on Certain Endings ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Only on Kratos ending... -(after getting Derris Emblem) If you've fixed Luin up to the point where there is a Lloyd statue in the fountain, examine the statue for a small scene -(after getting Derris Emblem) Sleep in the inn in Triet for a scene. You have to have talked to those two kids in Heimdall to learn about protozoans. It's also possible that you needed to follow Kratos out of the inn in that scene at the beginning of the game as well, but I'm not sure. Only on one of the endings with Zelos... -um... I always hear people mentioning sidequests that are only available on one of the Zelos endings, but I can't think of a single example. Either you CAN do it after getting Kratos back (e.g. swimsuit event) or you can do it prior to going back to the Tower of Salvation (e.g. dinner party event). -So let me know if you think of one. -(but don't say the swimsuit event. *shakes fist*) Note that most sidequests require having eight characters in your party. If you get the Kratos ending, most sidequests are disabled between the Tower of Salvation to the point where you get the Derris-Emblem, but they all become available again after that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Character Relationships ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- As mentioned previously, many things can change based on who likes you most. Here are some things that mess with how much different characters like Lloyd: -Each and every point in the main plot dialogue where you are given a choice of what to say. -Skit Points (glowing circles on the map) -Some sidequests Here are a list of skit points.... Colette: Sylvarant - S of Ossa Trail (in desert) Sylvarant - E of Asgard Ranch (north of mountains) Sylvarant - W of Hima (around mountains) Tethe'alla- Thunder Shrine island Tethe'alla- E part of Sybak/Ozzet continent Tethe'alla- NE of Toize Mine (N of mountains) Genis : Sylvarant - SE of Iselia Sylvarant - N of Izoold (across bridge) Sylvarant - S of Tower of Salvation (big peninsula) Tethe'alla- dirt plains on N part of Sybak continent Tethe'alla- SW of Altamira Kraots : Sylvarant - S of Izoold (peninsula) Sylvarant - SW of Luin Sylvarant - S of Luin Tethe'alla- SW of Flanoir Raine : Sylvarant - SW of Triet Sylvarant - W of Mana Tower (on the other peninsula) Sylvarant - E of Asgard Ranch (south of mountains) Tethe'alla- E of Fooji Mountain Tethe'alla- S of Ymir Forest (right across water from the last one!) Sheena : Sylvarant - near Palmacosta house of salvation Sylvarant - SW of Hakonesia Peak (peninsula cut off by mountains) Tethe'alla- Thunder Shrine island (N of mountains) Tethe'alla- Mizuho area Tethe'alla- S of Ymir Forest (peninsula cut off by mountains) Zelos : Sylvarant - Island N of Palmacosta continent Sylvarant - Balacruf Island (cut off by mountains) Tethe'alla- E of Ice Shrine (around mountains) Tethe'alla- SE of Sybac Tethe'alla- W of Toize mine (few peninsulas over) Presea : Sylvarant - SW of Iselia (small area west of mountains) Sylvarant - Island W of Palmacosta Tethe'alla- Island SE of Thunder Shrine Tethe'alla- W of Toize Mine Tethe'alla- E of Toize Mine (E tip of that continent) Regal : Sylvarant - Thoda Geyser Island Sylvarant- Katz Island Tethe'alla- Island in NW of map Tethe'alla- Altamira area Tethe'alla- S of Toize Mine The fortune teller in Triet can give you some insight as to who likes you best. However, what she says seems to be based on a fix amount, whereas anything affected by character relationships is based on how different characters are ranked. Even if you manage to make everyone hate you, the one who hates you the least is still the one who likes you the most.... Some Non-Ending Points Effected by Character Relationships: -If you mess up trying to get the Spiritua Statue from the geyser, the character with the highest affection will save you -In the Remote Island Ranch, the character with the highest affection will help Lloyd ambush the Desians while the character with the lowest affection acts as bait -In the Temple of Darkness, the character with the highest affection will worry about Lloyd when he goes into the room with the Sorcerer Ring changer -The character with the highest affection will have the longest conversation with Lloyd at Dirk's house after the Iselia Ranch (with the exception of Sheena and Kratos, he/she will be on the terrace) -The character with the highest affection will cheer Lloyd on in the single's arena competition -If Zelos is the character with the highest affection he will give Lloyd support in the big scene at Altessa's house. If anyone else is the character with the highest affection, it will be Colette ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other Plot Variations ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is a very brief overview of some other ways the plot can change between playthroughs. These points are independent of the different endings. -If you take the boat to Palmacosta as soon as you reach Izoold: + You meet Sheena at the boat in Palmacosta, later in House of Salvation + Meet Sophia only after going to Asgard Ranch + Clara drops the key to Mana Tower in Hima + Sheena saves a man from Clara before she joins in Luin + Sheena will be in your party while doing the Mana Tower + Kratos and Lloyd talk in the entrance of the Water Seal (Kratos notices Sheena outside) -If you go to Hima before taking the boat to Palmacosta: + You meet Sheena and Sophia in Hima, get Boltzman Book quest there + Go on a short goose chase to get the key to Mana Tower from a priest + Sheena saves a man from a generic monster before she joins in Luin + Sheena won't be in your party while doing the Mana Tower + You will go to Palmacosta via Max's boat after doing everything on the northern continent + Sheena will be in your party for all the events around Palmacosta + Sheena makes a comment about Altamira's roller coaster in the washtub scene + Party talks together in the entrance of the Water Seal -Sheena will attack you at either Mana Tower or Balacruf Mauseleum, whichever you do second. -The stages of Colette's illness and the camp scenes following the Sylvarant seals depend on which order you do them. -In some cases, Sheena will not join you at the normal point in Luin. It doesn't seem to be based on whether you said she was cute or nice, whether you even saw the cute/nice scene, whether you told her she could join or not, or whether you went to Hima or Palmacosta first. What determines it is a mystery so far. Anyway, she joins later at Asgard Ranch. -If Zelos is the character with the highest affection he will give Lloyd support in the big scene at Altessa's house. If anyone else is the character with the highest affection, it will be Colette ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Credits ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Namco Hometek's Tales of Symphonia Website (http://tales.namco.com) The people on the forum inspired me to make this guide - Majestic Fantasian (http://www.din.or.jp/~albion/tales/) for various info - Jim Breen's WWWJDIC (http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/wwwjdic/) for deciphering the above site ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tales of Symphonia is (c) Namco Ltd & Kosuke Fujishima This guide was written by Cyllya; please don't distribute w/out permission Visit Phantasy Planet Aselia -> http://aselia.cjb.net ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
